MSc in Mathematics

For graduates wishing to continue their studies, we offer an MSc in Mathematics (Laurea magistrale), a two-year second-level degree that provides students with advanced knowledge of Mathematics and high-level skills in problem solving and related methods. This programme has no entrance test. Students have the possibility to work autonomously, preparing for responsible positions in scientific industry, management, finance, services, public administration, or independent mathematical and scientific research. Graduates are fully prepared to take on a PhD in Italy or abroad, a second-level Master or compulsory programmes for prospective schoolteachers. 67% of our students have a work experience during the course and 78% of our graduates are in employment one year after receiving their degree, 89% in three years and 100% after five years (source: Almalaurea Report 2017).

Our MSc in Mathematics is characterized not only by scientific excellence, but also by the wide range of options we offer within the syllabus. The freedom to choose the course of their academic career allows students to specialize in a particular area of Mathematics, and to work towards a research thesis that particularly interests them. The study programme is enriched by workshop activities and completed by an internship – in a company or school – in Italy or abroad. Through our links with international mobility organizations such as Erasmus and Atlas, students can also complete part of their syllabus at an overseas University.

Thanks to an agreement with the Universitat de València and the Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain), from the academic year 2017/18 our students can also take advantage from our dual master degree programme and obtain a qualification that is legally valid in both Italy and Spain. Students enroling on this programme attend their first year of study in Valencia and the second at our Universitty, taking their final exam in both cities.

The Ferrara School of Mathematics also awards a special qualification in recognition of academic excellence. Based on credits earned from courses held in foreign languages, Erasmus programme participation, and internships abroad, those selected for the Ferrara School of Mathematics Diploma will write their thesis in a foreign language, supervised by a foreign referee, and may take advanced level elective courses in English.
