<p>We establish that the Lavrentiev phenomenon does not occur for autonomous<br /><br />problems in the multiple integrals Calculus of Variations, provided that the inte-<br />grand is convex with respect to the gradient variable. The main novelty is that<br /><br />no other (artificial) restriction is assumed on the integrand or on the domain. The<br />core of the proof is based on a new approximation result for a parametric version<br />of the variational problem.</p>]]></content:encoded>

<div class="gmail_default">Quantum  computers have the potential to gain  algebraic and even up to  exponential speed up compared with its  classical counterparts, and can  lead to technology revolution in the  21st century. Since quantum  computers are designed based on quantum  mechanics principle, they are  most suitable to solve the Schrodinger  equation, and linear PDEs (and  ODEs) evolved by unitary operators.  The  most efficient quantum PDE  solver is quantum simulation based on  solving the Schrodinger equation.  It will be interesting to explore  what other problems in scientific  computing, such as ODEs, PDEs, and   linear algebra that arise in both  classical and quantum systems,  can  be handled by quantum simulation.  <br />We  will present a systematic way  to develop quantum simulation algorithms  for general differential  equations. Our basic framework is dimension  lifting, that transfers  nonlinear PDEs to linear ones, and linear ones  to Schrodinger type  PDEs. For non-autonomous PDEs and ODEs, or  Hamiltonian systems with  time-dependent Hamiltonians,  we also add an  extra dimension to  transform them into autonomous PDEs that have only  time-independent  coefficients, thus quantum simulations can be done  without using the  cumbersome Dyson’s series and time-ordering operators.  Our formulation  allows both qubit and qumode (continuous-variable)  formulations, and  their hybridizations, and provides the foundation for  analog quantum  computing.</div>

<div class="gmail_default"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Biography</span><br />Prof.  Shi Jin is the  Director of Institute of Natural Sciences, and Chair  Professor of  Mathematics, at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is also a  co-director  of the Shanghai Center of Applied Mathematics. He  was department chair  and Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor at  University of  WisconsinMadison, Chair of Department of Mathematics at  Shanghai Jiao  Tong University. He received a Feng Kang Prize of  Scientific Computing  in 2001 and a Morningside Silver Medal of  Mathematics at the  International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians in  2007. He is an  inaugural Fellow of the American Mathematical Society  (AMS) (2012), a  Fellow of Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics  (SIAM) (2013),  an inaugural Fellow of the China Society for Industrial  and Applied  Mathematics (CSIAM) (2020), and an Invited Speaker at the  International  Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in 2018.</div>

<div>In recent years, the Smoluchowski equation has been considered in  biomedical research to model the aggregation and diffusion of  beta-amyloid peptide in the cerebral tissue, a process thought to be  associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease. In this work, we  study the homogenization of a Smoluchowski system of  discrete  diffusion-coagulation equations with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary  conditions, defined in a periodically perforated domain through a two  scale convergence technique.</div>

    <content:encoded xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"><![CDATA[<p>Abstract: <span>The random matching problem consists of estimating the expected value of a transportation cost between the (random) empirical measure of independent identically distributed random variables, and their the common law, finding in particular asymptotic rates when the number of variables becomes large. Using a random PDE approach, M. Ledoux recently provided upper and lower bounds for the Wasserstein-Kantorovich cost in the case of standard Gaussian random variables, in any (but finite) dimension. In this seminar we will illustrate how a similar technique leads to some results in the infinite dimensional Gaussian setting, with applications e.g. the problem of matching samples of Brownian paths to the Wiener measure.</span></p>]]></content:encoded>

<p>Abstract: The purpose of this talk is to present a  generalization of Sakai’s work on anticanonical models of rational  surfaces to varieties of Fano type. We first show a characterization of  Fano type varieties using the singularities of anticanonical models.  Secondly, we study the decomposition of the anticanonical map using the  minimal model program. This is joint work with Dong Seon Hwang and Sung  Rak Choi.</p>

<p>Esso asserisce che, dato un campo di numeri K ed una curva ellittica E/K, <br />il gruppo abeliano E(K) è finitamente generato.</p>
<p>In questo seminario tratteremo la sua forma debole: per ogni m&gt;1, il gruppo abeliano <br />E(K)/mE(K) è finito.</p>
<p>Si potranno così vedere alcune delle definizioni <br />e delle tecniche di base della moderna Teoria dei Numeri, fra cui <br />curve ellittiche e coomologia dei gruppi.</p>]]></content:encoded>

<p class="zfr3Q" id="h.p_ptVaWxuCPqa1">In 1993 G. Alberti proved a celebrated result, conjectured by L. Ambrosio and E. De Giorgi, concerning a rank-one property for the singular part of the derivative of a vector-valued map with bounded variation. We will discuss a recent elementary proof of this result together with some applications to BV functions in sub-Riemannian Carnot groups. These are joint works with S. Don and A. Massaccesi.</p>

<p class="zfr3Q" id="h.p_9SuyOFB0RTgV">The Gauss-Green formula is of significant relevance in many areas of mathematical analysis and mathematical physics. This motivated several investigations to extend such formulas to more general classes of integration domains and weakly differentiable vector fields. In the Euclidean setting it has been shown by Silhavy (2005) and Chen, Torres and Ziemer (2009) that Gauss-Green formulas hold for sets of finite perimeter and L^{\infty}-divergence measure fields, i. e. essentially bounded vector fields whose distributional divergence is a Radon measure. We extend these results to the context of stratified groups. In particular, we prove the existence of generalized normal traces on the reduced boundary of sets of locally finite h-perimeter without requiring De Giorgi's rectifiability theorem to hold. This is a joint work with V. Magnani.</p>

<p class="zfr3Q" id="h.p_j8IEm5o5SE68">After the work of Ambrosio, Gigli and Savaré, it is well-known that in any CD(K,+\infty) space, i.e. a space with Ricci curvature bounded from below in the sense of Sturm-Lott-Villani, the gradient flow of the Boltzmann entropy and the heat flow coincide. In 2014 Juillet proved that this correspondence holds also in the Heisenberg groups of any dimension, although these groups are not CD(K,+\infty) spaces. It was an open problem to establish the same correspondence in any Carnot group. In this talk, we give a positive answer to this question. This is a joint work with L. Ambrosio.</p>

<p class="zfr3Q" id="h.p_OVthSIMUJeyL">We say that a real valued function f, defined in a metric measure space, is approximable in a Lusin sense by Lipschitz functions if, for every \epsilon&gt;0, there exists a Lipschitz function that coincides with f outside a set of measure less than \epsilon. In Euclidean spaces, more generally in metric measure spaces satisfying the doubling and Poincarè inequality, Sobolev functions fulfill this approximation property in a quantitative form.</p>
<p class="zfr3Q" id="h.p_OWbtKKr2JeyW">In a joint work with L. Ambrosio and D. Trevisan we extend these results to a class of non-doubling metric measure structures. Our strategy relies upon pointwise estimates for heat semigroups and applies to Gaussian and RCD(K,\infty) spaces. As a consequence, we prove a first quantitative stability estimate for regular Lagrangian flows associated to Sobolev vector fields in an infinite dimensional setting.</p>

Gigli in order to give a definition of BV functions on RCD(K,\infty) spaces via suitable vector fields and then establish an extended Gauss-Green formula on a class of "regular" domains, which features the "normal trace" of vector fields with finite divergence measure. Then, we pass to the more classical context of a doubling metric measure space supporting a Poincaré inequality, where we reformulate the theory of "rough traces" of BV functions (after V. Maz'ya)in comparison with the Lebesgue-points characterization, and discuss the conditions under which the respective notions of trace coincide. Based on a joint work with M. Miranda Jr.</p>

More precisely, we look for the best shape and location of the Dirichlet regions which optimize these constants. According to the homogeneity of the problem, different situations occur and several questions remain open.</span></p>]]></content:encoded>
